Pretoria History

Pretoria was established in 1994 to provide the mass transit market with innovative lighting, ducting, and luggage rack systems. Located in Charlotte, NC, Pretoria is part of the larger Safe Fleet Bus & Rail family.  To learn more visit www.safefleet.net/busandrail.

1994
Founded by Herman Myburgh. Company specializes in overhead luggage racks and ducting for buses
1996
1st order for luggage racks shipped to Thomas Built Bus
1999
Introduction of fluorescent aisle lighting systems for transit buses
2000
1st orders for aisle lighting and overhead racks for transit buses
2005
Company attends its first industry tradeshow – APTA Expo, held in Dallas, TX
2006
Major aisle lighting accounts secured
By late 2006, the company captures the majority of transit lighting market and moved into new facility located in Murfreesboro, TN
2007
Pretoria introduces its first LED interior lighting systems for transit bus and rail car
In mid-2007, Pretoria is acquired and merged with two additional brands Transpec and Specialty Manufacturing. A new brand and holding company are formed called Specialty Manufacturing Inc.
2009
Through customer feedback, the company launches a fully programmable LED aisle light allowing brightness to be user-controlled
2013
In October 2013, the equity firm that owned SMI and its related brands, packaged it together with four additional brands – ROM, Bustin, Prime Design, and Fire Research. Together, all eight brands were purchased by investment firm The Sterling Group, of Houston, TX. As a result, Safe Fleet is formed as the parent (holding company) of all brands within its portfolio.
2015
Two plant locations (Murfreesboro, TN and Pineville, NC) are merged and then centrally relocated to Charlotte, NC
